Q: Hi, my name is Amanda and I have been a Production Manager for a web based production company in NYC for the past two years. I am having a dilemma - I have major communication issues with my EP. She won't allow me to make any decisions without her consent. She has to double check every document - from releases to what I order for crew lunches. She takes her time getting back to me with approval and that affects my job. Im not sure how to handle this and its a little frustrating. What should I do?
A: Amanda, what I would say is, if your EP isn't keeping the lines of communication open with you, you have to stay ahead of the game. Give yourself an early deadline well before these documents have to be in. Prepare things a week in advance if you can and send it for approval. A day before your advanced deadline send a friendly reminder. Still no response? Drop by her office, check in. She may just be ready to review and sign off quickly to get it out of the way. As frustrating as it is, its our job to keep on top of them. You just have to change your strategy.
Good luck : )
