The body of aspiring British filmmaker, Lee Halpin, 27, was discovered in an abandoned hostel in the northern English city of Newcastle while filming a documentary on the plight of the homeless. Temperatures had plummeted to below zero the night before and it is suspected that he may have died from hypothermia.
The documentary was to be apart of an application into the UK's Channel 4 Investigative Journalism internship. To satisfy the applications' theme of fearlessness, Halpin planned to spend this week living the lifestyle and exposing the adversities of those living on the street. In a video filmed the night before he set out to begin shooting, he said he planned on "sleeping rough and scrounging for food" although it caused "a huge amount of trepidation among family and friends".
According to the local police, his body was discovered just before 10am Wednesday, only three days into filming. It was believed that no third party was involved, but two men, 26 and 30, were arrested in connection to the death and on the suspicion of being in possession of a controlled substance. They have since posted bail.
An autopsy is planned for this week.
